Denis Zakaria has certainly turned his Chelsea career around!
The past two months had not been an easy one for Denis Zakaria. Signed on loan on deadline day in the past transfer window, the midfielder had failed to get minutes under Graham Potter, including Thomas Tuchel.
On Wednesday, he was handed his debut against Dinamo Zagreb. The midfielder started alongside Jorginho and Mount, and in the early stages of the game, he made some eye-catching tackles before his goal came in the 30th minute to seal a 2-1 victory for the Blues.
Speaking to the media after playing for 70 minutes, Zakaria said of his debut per Tribuna:
"Very excited and very happy for my debut and my goal. We won too so I'm really happy," Denis Zakaria told BT Sport after his Chelsea debut and match-winning goal in the Dinamo Zagreb win.
"I think it was important for me to have a good game and help the team to win. The job is done today. The win is the most important thing.
"On my mind was only that I have to score. I hit it as hard as possible and it went in so I'm really happy."
"Very, very difficult I have to say," he added when asked what it was like to wait for his Chelsea debut for two months.
"I like to play and always want to play. When you have to see your team-mates from the bench it is not easy but I was always behind the team and was waiting for my chance. Today it came and I took my chance."
Graham Potter also spoke very highly of Zakaria following his performance, per football.london:
“He’s been, as you can imagine, frustrated and disappointed when he doesn’t play," Potter said when asked about Zakaria's debut. "That’s the life of a player but he’s handled himself really well. He’s kept himself fit, he’s trained really hard, and supported the team and his teammates in a really good way.
"When you do that, you give yourself a chance to perform when your opportunity comes. So credit to him. Everyone was so happy for him and it was a great story for the whole group I think.”
