Former Chelsea Doctor, Eva Caneiro set to make dazzling return to football with new role in the 2022 World Cup revealed.

Remember Eva Caneiro? The former Chelsea Doctor? The Blues could be seeing her back in football action again, this time, in the World Cup.

One of the major incidents during Mourinho's second spell at Chelsea was the 'dismissal' of the club's Doctor, Eva Caneiro at the time.

Per GiveaMeSport, on the opening weekend of the 2015-16 Premier League campaign, Mourinho clashed with the then-Chelsea physio after she ran onto the pitch alongside colleague Jon Fearn to treat the injured Eden Hazard.

Mourinho’s side were drawing 2-2 against Swansea City and the game had entered injury-time when the incident occurred.

The revered Portuguese coach was furious with the medics, telling reporters afterwards: “I wasn’t happy with my medical staff because even if you are a medical doctor or secretary on the bench, you have to understand the game.”

Mourinho felt that the medical intervention had affected his team’s chances of scoring a late winner and securing two more points.

Dr Carneiro was subsequently demoted by Mourinho, whose behaviour was described by one leading sports physician as “absolutely appalling”.

She left Chelsea six weeks after the incident, having been prevented from attending matches or training sessions, before taking legal action against Mourinho.

Dr Carneiro had reportedly turned down an offer of £1.2 million ahead of an employment tribunal.

The case was eventually settled confidentially, with Dr Carneiro dropping a claim of sex discrimination and harassment against Mourinho, who’d reportedly called her a “daughter of a wh*re” on that ill-fated day in August 2015.

Chelsea apologised “unreservedly” to the Gibraltarian, admitting she’d done nothing wrong while describing her as a “highly competent and professional sports doctor”, per The Guardian

What did Eva Carneiro say after the case was settled?

Dr Carneiro said at the time: “I am relieved that today we have been able to conclude this tribunal case.

“It has been an extremely difficult and distressing time for me and my family and I now look forward to moving forward with my life.

“My priority has always been the health and safety of the players and fulfilling my duty of care as a doctor.”

Reflecting on the events of 2015 and 2016 in 2020, she told talkSPORT: “It’s impossible to go through something that I went through for the best part of a year of my life and not be changed by it. But it hasn’t put me off at all.

“It’s fair to say I needed time off, I needed to enjoy my job again and be a doctor again without the complications of being in the limelight. I was in every paper in every country for a really long time and I wasn’t at all comfortable with that.

“Certain individuals in football wanted to treat me like I did something wrong, when it was clear I was only doing my job.”

In the summer of 2021, Dr Carneiro said that she was “finally enjoying football again” thanks to the Euro 2020 semi-finals.

“Well it’s only taken 6 years but I’m finally enjoying football again!!!!” she tweeted. “Thank you #ENGvDEN #SpainVsItaly.”

Several months later, in November 2021, it was announced that the sports medicine specialist was involved in football again after becoming an owner at non-league side Lewes FC.

“Love the beautiful game and football has such power,” she wrote on Instagram. “Imagine using it for good. Imagine finding a club with values as the centre of its ethos.

“I’m a proud owner of @lewesfcwomen and @lewesfcmen.”

Eva Caneiro's new role in the 2022 World Cup:

According to The Sun, Dr Carneiro is also playing her part in the upcoming 2022 World Cup.

It’s claimed that she’s been working with the Aspetar Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Hospital in Qatar ahead of the showpiece international tournament.

Her medical expertise has apparently been required by organisers of the Qatar World Cup, which gets underway on November 20.

After everything she’s been through, it’s great that Dr Carneiro is involved with the sport again.
