John Terry has given his verdict on Chelsea's future captaincy role in the past.
As we go into a new era, new captaincy would need to be decided. It's not about how long you have played in the first team, and it's about how hard you are willing to fight for the badge. Current Chelsea captain, Cesar Azpilicueta is on the verge of departing the club, and it remains to be seen who will replace him in the role.
However, former Blues captain John Terry has already given his verdict on who should be Chelsea's captain after Cesar Azpilicueta in the past. The former Chelsea captain believes Chelsea's Mason Mount is the right person for the role:
“There are many ways to skin a cat, and Azpilicueta does it differently,” Terry said told Stadium Astro about Azpilicueta’s captaincy.
“His performances first and foremost have to speak for [themselves], and his performances certainly do that.
“I think when you’re the captain, it’s important that you’re a consistent performer week in week out, and you give [at least] seven out of 10 every week.
“Azpi does that for the group, and, again, he’s that example, for everyone else to follow.”
On who he thinks should be Chelsea's next Captain, Terry said:
"I think the progression from that or when Azpi decides to go would probably lead itself to Mase for me,” the former England international added.
Mason Mount on the contrary is set to depart his boyhood club for Manchester United should a deal for him strikes through. His current contract expires in 2024 and he is not keen on a renewal.
Thiago Silva and Reece James are two other names worthy on the list of potential replacement for Azpilicueta. It is up to Mauricio Pochettino to decide who he will appoint to take up the leadership role of his team.
