"He will be the next Captain." Mauricio Pochettino finally decides on Chelsea's next Captain as Azpilicueta completes Atletico Madrid move.
With the Blues current captain Cesar Azpilicueta set to complete move to Atletico Madrid, three names have emerged as favourites for the captaincy position at Chelsea.
"Understand Chelsea’s final green light to César Azpilicueta contract termination is expected soon. Work in progress. 🚨🔵 #CFC
"Azpilicueta has agreed a two-year deal at Inter, verbal agreement in place since last week.'' —Fabrizio Romano.
The defender has been Chelsea's captain since 2019, and has been pivotal to the Blues' historic Europa, Champions League, Super Cup & Club World cup wins during his term, a tenure one would call a success.
With the captain set to depart the club, three names have emerged as favourites to replace him at the club.
Reece James, Thiago Silva and Kepa Arrizabalaga are three names favorite to succeed Cesar Azpilicueta. With the Blues kicking off pre-season in July, Mauricio Pochettino is believed to be working towards getting his team set and re-inforced. One of such positions is the captaincy at Stamford Bridge.
Recall Reece James' father Nigel James had once tipped the 23-year-old to assume the captain position at Chelsea in the future.
Speaking when Reece James made his 100th appearance for Chelsea, Nigel said:
"100 games… you just sit there and think, ‘Wow’. To do that at 21… there are some people who play 300 in their career. But I’m not emotional. The part where I will be emotional is the day he becomes Chelsea captain. That’s his ambition and mine as well.
“Didier Drogba was a legend and so was John Terry. But Reece has been at Chelsea since he was six. There isn’t a player who has been there that young and gone on to wear the armband. The goal is to be the man that, when you hear Chelsea, you think Reece James.”
Now of course, could be Reece James' opportunity to fill Azpilicueta's boots as he has always shown strong leadership qualities in the past, fighting for the badge and giving one hundred per cent on the pitch.
Thiago Silva is another name on the cards and is very much favorite to land the role of captain at Chelsea. The role is definitely not strange to him as he had been long-term captain at PSG before his move to West London in 2020. The veteran is technically sound, a genius at CB, alert, has won the heart of many Chelsea fans with quality defending. In terms of experience, the 38-year old has a wealth of it. It would definitely be no surprise should he land the role.
Third on the list is Kepa Arrizabalaga. The Stopper is believed to be Mauricio Pochettino's favourite to land the number one role at Stamford Bridge. Kepa is mostly seen giving technical advise to his teammates on the pitch, and is believed to possess some commanding qualities.
It remains to be seen however, who Mauricio Pochettino will hand over the leadership of his Chelsea team to.
HAVE YOUR SAY.
Who do you think, among the three should be Chelsea's new captain, Blues
I think Silva will be their captain as he is a professional footballer with much experience
