The Chelsea coach has spoken out on his decision to make Reece James captain.
Chelsea will be back in action against Liverpool on Sunday and head coach Mauricio Pochettino spoke on several issues affecting the squad. One of such was his decision to make Reece James captain over Thiago Silva.
Earlier this week, Reece James was appointed captain of Chelsea Football Club, a decision that sparked numerous reactions from Chelsea fans. Thiago Silva was favourite in everyway to become Blues captain given his experience and excellent leadership qualities.
However, Mauricio Pochettino has clarified the issue. Per Football.London, when asked why he chose Reece James to be captain, the Chelsea head coach revealed apart from the leadership qualities seen in the right back, one other reason for the selection was because he came right through the Chelsea Academy, and this was the reason why he was a "perfect" choice for captaincy:
"He is not only a player that can be a leader, his character, his qualities. He is present and he is going to be the future also, he came through the academy. For me and the club he is a perfect player, person to be a captain."
Meanwhile, the Blues are in an unending saga with Liverpool for midfielder, Moises Caicedo. When asked on what the current situation regarding the deal was, the Chelsea coach had the following to say:
"I think you know me very well. I never talk about players who do not belong to us. I think I am so respectful. I can tell you we are working really hard to add more players to the squad, add quality. If we have some update to make for you, the club will do.
"At the moment I'm not going to talk about players who do not belong to us. I think that is pretty important to be respectful with all the clubs and the player. Like any club, we are working hard to try to add more quality and of course to reinforce the team, the squad. We are working hard, I am so happy in the way we are doing things with Paul, Laurence and the owners. The relationship is really good and really close. So far, so good. We are so happy to work in this way."
Although Chelsea are a team in transition, the head coach wants no excuse from his boys on Sunday and expects a win over Liverpool:
"You can anticipate the transition, you can see what is going to come, you can be ahead of the problems. When you have the backing of the club, I think it's being clever in how you anticipate the situation.
"Of course, we are Chelsea, the history of the club is to win. Even if we are transition, we cannot give the message that we are in transition, we need to win. We need to be ready to win and we are going to be ready to win vs Liverpool even if they are a really good team. The mentality for the players and the whole club is to compete in the best way to be strong and really believe in us. I'm not going to accept a different way to think.
No excuse for us because we need to be strong and for sure we have very good players and players that can compete and fight for big things. The process is always about improving. We started only one month ago, we need to set our principles, in time we are going to arrive in our best condition to be there with the big sides and put the club where it deserves to be."
The head coach also confirmed the Blues will be in the Market for a replacement for injured Nkunku, while confirming that in the race for who would be Chelsea's number one goalkeeper, Kepa is a little bit ahead of Robert Sanchez.
