Thiago Silva breaks silence on Chelsea captain snub; reacts to Reece James appointment.

Just yesterday, Reece James was announced as Chelsea's new captain, a decision that sparked numerous reactions from the Chelsea fanbase as to why Thiago Silva was not picked.

A club statement confirming Reece James' appointment had read:

"Reece James has officially been confirmed as Chelsea Football Club’s new captain. On assuming the role of captain, Reece said:

'I'm so happy to take on the role and responsibility,' said James. 'I know I've got big shoes to fill because we have had huge captains here in the past, but I am excited.

'I have been at Chelsea pretty much my whole life. I started here when I was six and to come through the Academy is tough. But to go on and become captain, it's a great feeling for me and my family.'

Head coach Mauricio Pochettino said: ‘This is a decision taken by me and the club. We are very pleased Reece will captain the side this season.

‘He leads by example and his attitude and dedication to Chelsea has been clear throughout pre-season. He proudly wore the armband during our summer tour and will take up the challenge of leading our squad with his own approach and ideas.’

Co-sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart said: ‘Reece’s connection with Chelsea has been forged over 17 years. He understands the traditions of the club and the responsibilities that come with being captain.

‘He knows the standards required to win at this club – both from his time in the Academy and the first team – and it is a very proud moment for Reece and everyone connected to the club.'

No doubt, the decision to make Reece James captain was a collective decision by the Blues' hierarchy, including coach Mauricio Pochettino.

Thiago Silva is one name which had been favorite to land the captain role given his experience and quality he brings on the pitch; hence it's somewhat surprising to see Reece James appointed Chelsea captain.

However, Reece James appointment could mean several things and is a huge transfer hint that the Blues could see the veteran leave for another club, or that he could see less playing time given his age.

Whatever the case, before the club must have made this decision Thiago Silva might have been consulted. The veteran has always spoken highly of Reece James in the past and will no doubt be proud to see him take up the captain armband.

Thiago Silva remains a leader and legend at the club with or without an armband.

CONFIRMED: Todd Boehly finally decides on FIVE players who will be leaving Stamford Bridge in the summer.

Todd Boehly has decided he will offload five Chelsea players.  Since taking over as Co-owner of Chelsea, it has not clicked for Todd Boehly despite splashing the cash to sign some of the big names in world football.  Consecutive run of losses and sloppy display from players are two core reasons the Blues will be considering a squad overhaul this summer, and five players will be offloaded. According to a report from the Spanish publication SPORT, it is claimed that Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Hakim Ziyech, Mason Mount, Conor Gallagher and Ruben Loftus-Cheek are being lined up for sale which could raise a whopping £129 million. If the market values of the players in question are met, it would provide the incoming Chelsea manager with a hefty transfer chest to spend and bring in a couple of new faces to bolster the squad over the summer.
